Studio MTX

Studio MTX is part of the Montex Haute Couture embroidery atelier. It was founded in 2013 to bring embroidery into a new field of expression.

Architectural Embroidery

By moving embroidery from clothing into space, a new savoir-faire emerges, drawing on the vocabulary of traditional embroidery to develop its own language. The thread becomes a cable, riveting borders on couture, the sequin evolves into a thermo-lacquered aluminium module.

Studio MTX offer architects and interior designers hitherto unseen materials born from the unique combination of techniques from different fields of the applied arts including embroidery, weaving, tapestry and leatherwork.

What We Do

Studio MTX collaborates with architects, interior designers, decorators, and artists to create bespoke surfaces and textures that elevate spaces.

Drawing from its rich patrimonial savoir-faire, Studio MTX crafts innovative, made-to-measure creations at various scales— from walls of ribbons enclosing pieces of brushed brass to screens that highlight the tense interplay between metal and silk. From intricate details on furniture to architectural installations that transform entire spaces, each creation embodies a fusion of craftsmanship and innovation.

Studio MTX brings its expertise to high-end hospitality, private residences, retail environments, and artistic collaborations — offering a range of bespoke services, each shaped to meet the singular nature of every project:

  • Projects

Bespoke, made-to-measure designs — For projects requiring a singular vision, Studio MTX develops fully custom creations from scratch.

Through a thoughtful and collaborative process — combining material research, sample development, and prototyping — we design bespoke pieces that integrate seamlessly into each project, enhancing its architectural expression and visual identity.

  • Artefacts

Studio MTX craftsmanship at the scale of an object — Artefacts is a curated collection of signature pieces that encapsulate our savoir-faire and design.

From window panels and claustras to lighting and mirrors, each piece reflects our singular approach to material interplay, embroidery, and sculptural presence.

  • Surfaces

Ready-to-use creations from the Carnet de Surfaces — a library of pre-developed textures, each one the result of Studio MTX’s singular embroidery techniques and proprietary design research.

These surfaces offer elegant, immediately applicable solutions, supported by visual references, technical details, and pricing for seamless integration into projects.

Process

At Studio MTX, each project is an encounter — between craftsmanship and creativity, technique and vision. Our approach to bespoke architectural embroidery and innovative surfaces is rooted in dialogue and shared intent.

Bringing together a singular set of in-house disciplines — from design and material research to engineering, 3D modelling, prototyping, and realisation — Studio MTX coordinates each project with precision and nuance.

  • Exploration & Visioning

Every project begins with an exchange to understand the client’s vision, the context, and the technical requirements.

We welcome clients into our studio-atelier, where they can engage directly with finished pieces, material samples, and embroidery textures — a tactile experience that sparks ideas and refines choices.

  • Design & Prototyping

Once the creative and technical direction is defined, ideas begin to take shape through material and technical research, and embroidery sampling — gradually transforming abstract intentions into tangible prototypes.

Clients remain closely involved, reviewing samples and suggesting adjustments to ensure the final design integrates seamlessly into the project.

  • Crafting & Realization

Once the design is fully developed, realisation begins in our ateliers, where expert handwork shapes a dialogue between embroidery, weaving, and applied arts and digital techniques.

Art Direction

Trained at ENSCI-Les Ateliers, Mathieu Bassée began his career at Hermès as a leather goods designer.

While working on bags and luggage collections, he was also entrusted with interior design projects for the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, the Design Project Room in Geneva — where he collaborated with Pierre Hardy and Superstudio — and the Issey Miyake boutique in Paris.

With a deep admiration for handmade craftsmanship and a fascination for modular, geometric designs, he joined Studio MTX in 2015 and has led art direction and development since 2017.

Past & Future

At the origin of Studio MTX: Atelier Montex, founded in Paris in 1949, initially focused on crafting embroidered fabrics by metre for Parisian fashion houses. The early 1980s witnessed a transformative period with an eclectic and innovative vision that redefined the company’s identity.

This evolution led to collaborations with major fashion names throughout the 1990s, making Atelier Montex a prestigious partner in haute couture.

The company's integration into CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art in 2011, and its recognition as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant in 2013, further solidified its reputation. In March 2021, the atelier, together with Studio MTX, relocated to le19M

.

At once a place of work, of gathering, and of transmission, le19M is an exceptional architectural achievement which aims to showcase the savoir-faire of artisans and creators. The story of a unique site that hosts both workshops, a school, and a gallery space open to all.
